"Can You Just Make It Go Viral?" (And Why That's the Wrong Goal)

"Can you just make it go viral?" is a question we've been asked by clients who — within about thirty seconds of hearing it — we knew weren't the right fit for what we do.

Ouch. I know. But it's the truth, and you deserve honest over nice.

Here's the thing about virality that no one really talks about: if you're a small business, you need to actually be ready to go viral before you start chasing it.

What does "ready" look like?

If you sell a product — how many can you realistically fulfill in a day and still deliver on your promise? If you sell a service — how do the people suddenly flooding your page actually book with you? And how many bookings can you even take on?

Going viral without infrastructure isn't a win. It's a bottleneck dressed up as a highlight reel.

Being ready means:

  • Your email list is set up and collecting subscribers

  • You have an opt-in form that's easy to find — in your link in bio, on your website, somewhere accessible

  • Your welcome sequence is ready to deliver value from day one

  • You have something to offer even if you can't deliver the service or product immediately

Without those pieces in place? Virality doesn't build your business. It just overwhelms it.

But here's the bigger issue.

The algorithm has a way of making you feel like your entire success depends on blowing up overnight. Like if you're not hitting a million views, you're doing something wrong.

You're not.

Virality is a vanity metric. Visibility is what actually moves the needle — and those are two very different things.

Real visibility looks like:
→ Your dream client replying to your story saying "this is exactly what I needed"
→ Someone saving your post because they finally feel understood
→ A follower DMing you for your link after watching a reel you almost didn't post

That's not measured in views. It's measured in connection. In the right person seeing you at the right time and thinking "okay, she gets it."

So what's the alternative?

Take the pressure off performing and get back to being present.

You don't need 100,000 views. You need content that consistently connects with the people who are already watching, already interested, already one touchpoint away from reaching out.

✨ The people who want to work with you.
✨ The people who are already in your corner.
✨ The people who just need to see you one more time before they're ready to say yes.

That's the entire foundation of how I approach content strategy at That Creative Girl — clarity and consistency over clickbait. Because when your content reflects your voice, your values, and your vision, you don't need to go viral to be effective.

You just need a plan that actually works for you.
